A seven-year-old boy in New Hampshire has died after investigators said he was burned and beaten at home.

According to People, Jaevion Riley, 7, was found unconscious with severe burns last week in an apartment in Manchester, New Hampshire. Riley was taken to a local hospital in Boston where he died on Tuesday (January 24) after being in a coma for a week.

Though an autopsy is still pending, Riley's father, Murtadah Mohammad, has been charged with first-degree assault, second-degree assault, falsifying physical evidence, and endangering the welfare of a child.

"It is absolutely gruesome, it is horrific, and it is sickening to look at. It makes me physically ill looking at my own son because of what this man did to him," the child's mother, Rainah Riley, told NBC 10 prior to her child's death.

"It looks as if it's from boiling water or oil, or … maybe set on fire," the mother continued. "This man was trying to kill my child."

Riley alleged that she began seeing signs of abuse after Mohammad received split custody of Jaevion.

"I called for wellness checks on him when he was with him, for the bruising, and nobody did anything," Riley said. "The system has failed not only my child, but so many children. And something needs to be done, because this isn't OK. It's not. Like, when is enough enough?"

According to court documents obtained by NBC 10, Mohammad initially told authorities that he was in the shower while a pot of water was on the stove. However, police said there were inconsistencies in his story as Mohammad later stated he "used hot water and electrical cords to discipline his son for lying," People reports.

Attorney General John M. Formella and Manchester Police Chief Allen D. Aldenberg said the investigation into Jaevion's death is ongoing.
