A 9-year-old boy in North Carolina is being hailed as a hero after he saved his classmate from choking by performing the Heimlich maneuver, per NBC News.
Jayceon Branch, a student at Raleigh Oak Charter Elementary, saved his peer, Donye Moore, 7, last week while they were on the basketball court.
School security videos show Moore hunched over as he choked on a granola bar that got stuck in his throat.
Without hesitation, Branch approached his friend and performed the Heimlich.
“I learned it from watching YouTube," Branch said. "Because a teacher saw a student choking, and the student came to the teacher and started doing this, and then the teacher started doing what I did to Donye.”
Eric Johnson, the executive director of Raleigh Oak Charter School, applauded the nine-year-old student's heroic actions.
“He was a hero; he just saved a kid’s life,” Johnson said.
“He sprung into action and did his thing. We really try to teach that at our school. ... We’re really proud of him," he added.
On Monday (March 11), Raleigh Oak Charter held a "clap out" to celebrate Branch's heroism. Branch and Moore walked the hallways of the school while parents, teachers, and students cheered for them.
